Valley of the Car Line

OK, so elementary school pick-up procedures vary a lot!  Our particular school has a lot of kids.   If I want any shot of getting out of that parking lot in reasonable time, I need to be there a good 40 minutes before dismissal….for real.  It’s fine really……that few minutes of the day has become my refuge of thought and planning.  I have my perfect spot, my I-Pod, my notebook and iced tea or hot chai.

Today was no different really….oh, but wait it was raining and it’s election day!  Double trouble!  I went to school 1 hour and 45 minutes early.  Being that it was raining, I wanted to park and wait in the car line….behind what will be the bus line.  I parked my car in the coveted first spot.  Feeling pretty good,  I went in to do my business…..vote! (you have a dirty mind!)  When I came out a few minutes later, to my surprise I was no longer the first person in the car line.  Granted, it was raining…but Holy Tomatoes Batman!  An hour and a half early!?  Crud….I had the coveted first spot…I couldn’t leave!  So, there I was stuck in what was bound to become the Valley of the Car Line.  So what did I do…….I did what all good writers do.  I grabbed my notebook, my pen, put on my I-Pod and began to pen this post.  I am a bit old-fashioned.  I prefer to to put pen to paper before most of my posts.

As I was sitting there, the traffic was growing, the rain began coming down even harder.  The car line was growing and the people coming to vote were confused where to go.  A car pulled up next to me and the driver just stared at me.  I motioned for her to go around me.  I got flipped the bird….such a lovely suburban outlet we live in!  I just smiled and went back to writing…wanting to eviscerate her in fiction (line from the movie Knight’s Tale :)   ).   I suppose it’s a good thing to see people coming out to vote.  I just wish they were a little nicer about it….jeez!  The rain was really coming down.  I had my hot chai, my notebook, my I-Pod….life’s good.
